Slander or Not?
I am a part time hockey coach and a structural engineer. Recently I was informed that I was not asked to coach last year because, "He is a drunk and cannot be out on the ice with kids. Last year he was on the ice drunk with the kids on numerous occions." This comment was made to a parent by a head coach when they asked why I was not out with the kids. I have been a very popular coach with the kids and parents in the past. The coaching is not a paid position, it is strictly volunteer, but the length of the season and the willingness of parents to talk about anything has me concerned that this lie could effect me professionally. Is this worth talking to a lawyer about? Is my time better spent trying to get a public apology through the league? Is there a better course of action? Help, I am hurt, confused, and flustered by all of this.
