Where to live in Richardson, TX?

Hi, we have a small family (3 year old and expecting another) and will be moving from out of state to the Dallas area to attend SMU. Unfortunately, PhD fellowships are less than outstanding, so we're trying to find a good balance between value and safety for our young family and thought Richardson might be a good fit for us. We're looking to rent (preferably something other than an apartment). Is this a safe town? Any areas to be wary of? What would be a good price range to rent something approx. 1000 sq. ft.?
