Varicose veins??

I have always had them on 1 leg it's a hereditary thing but i noticed my leg like stinging i took off my jeans and this area of veins was swollen raised and hard about the size of 1/2 dollar i have no insurance so i wondered if anyone had ever had this problem i tried putting ice on it?i have been walking alot in the evenings and i am not used to that don't know if that could of caused it or not?Any suggestions i want to make sure it is not serious .Thanks
